On Thursday, November 2nd, Hollywood PAL hosted the 2017 Hollywood PAL Awards Gala: Dia de los Muertos at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. Over 250 guests enjoyed a festive celebration of community with delicious food, exhilarating music by the Big O’ Nasty Get Down Band and Angela Parrish, and an luxurious silent auction featuring Hollywood’s finest goods and entertainment. At the gala, Hollywood PAL presented Beatrice Girmala and Mitch O’Farrell with 2017 Community Leadership Awards as well as Donelle Dadigan with the Heart of Hollywood Award. PAL kids Liliana Garcia and Jose Ortega were recognized as well for being this year’s PAL Kids of the Year. The menu included delicious food from Soul Hollywood, El Floridita and Loteria Grill Hollywood, while the bar was hosted by Firestone Brewery, Tito’s Handmade Vodka, and One Hope Winery. Meanwhile K&L presented the Hollywood PAL Wine Wall! Special thanks to our fantastic table sponsors without which Hollywood PAL would not be able to serve over 600 kids each year with high-quality after-school activities and mentoring.

Twelve Hollywood PAL kids worked with muralist Man One to envision, create and produce a stunning mural in celebration for their community. Under the leadership of the nonprofit organization Arts Bridging the Gap, the entire experience has been truly inspiring for the participants and the police officers – so inspiring that another mural has been planned for Hollywood!  Painting will begin November 18th. For more information about the project, please check out the Arts Bridging the Gap Facebook Page.

On July 17th, nineteen girls showed up to the PAL Office ready for their week of learning life skills. PAL Officer Ericka Abrams and Jr. Cadet Officer Zandy Terrones planned a nonstop, riveting week of workshops, guest speakers, bonding and empowerment.  A huge thank you to our community partners and friends who made all of this possible!

This summer, the Hollywood PAL Officers decided to try something new, something that would change kids lives forever. They designed a Young Men’s Enrichment Academy and a Young Women’s Empowerment Academy, both for the purpose of teaching life skills. Last week, the young men completed their week and the results were incredible. Thanks to our community partners, these young men learned how to tie a tie, budget their spending, communicate with adults, basic self defense skills, how to do an oil change, the value of a day’s hard work and so much more. These youth were transformed! A huge thank you to our partners and the friends who made this week possible.

Hollywood PAL is the proud partner of the 2017 National PAL Mentoring Grant. While mentoring has been an important part of our mission, this grant will help us to create a structure for mentor training and mentee tracking. Officer Abrams, who has been overseeing the Tutoring Program, has taken the lead for the Mentoring Program as well. The Hollywood PAL policy is that any child who has a G.P.A under 2.0 must be placed on academic probation and attend tutoring in order to stay in PAL. We currently have 36 kids being tutored. These children and a few others have been selected for the mentoring program as well.  PAL Officers as well as select staff and volunteers will be trained as mentors and work with 5-10 kids each this year with the support of National PAL’s mentor curriculum. We are excited to see how these children are impacted by having a mentor. If you are interested in volunteering with the tutoring and mentoring program please come see Officer Abrams in the office.
