The Youth Leadership Council started a recycling program two months ago at the police station and has been collecting, sorting and cashing in every week. The idea was to help the environment, while also raising money for Relay for Life and its cancer research. Last week, YLC organized 3 drop-off days and did a big push, encouraging PAL families and local businesses to participate as well. They raised over $700, which will be donated to cancer research. Now they are on to their next volunteer project… got any suggestions?

On March 25th, 2014, Tommy Hofheimer celebrated his 13th birthday and his bar mitzvah. Tommy generously asked friends and family to donate to PAL in lieu of gifts, and thus raised $3,990 for Hollywood PAL! This amount indirectly covers the cost of our soccer field for 2 months, without which we could not serve our 8 soccer teams (150 players). A big thank you to Tommy and the following friends and family who donated to PAL in his honor.

On February 23rd, 16 of PAL’s Martial Arts students participated in the Compete Karate Championships which was held at the Ontario Convention Center. The Compete Tournament is highly ranked and one of the most competitive tournaments in the Nation. PAL students trained hard, fought well and were disciplined and respectful throughout the event. They received many positive comments about their abilities and about how they exhibited grace and professionalism. Of our 16 competitors, they won the following 17 trophies in Fighting and Kata competition: Three 4th Places Trophies; Seven 3rd Place Trophies; Six 2nd Place Trophies; and, One 1st Place Trophy. It was a great learning event for all of the students. Some of our normal champions were eliminated in the early phases of the competition, while some our newest competitors placed in the final three. The next tournament will be the Bob and Barbara White Royal Family Kids Fundraiser on March 23 in Huntington Beach CA

Congratulations to the 14 PAL Kids and Officer Maria Ceja for completing the 2014 LA Marathon on March 8, 2014. This is the 5th year that Hollywood PAL has participated in the program Students Run LA (SRLA), and our kids continue to prove themselves. It was not easy training 3 times a week for 6 months, but they passed the finish line with flying colors. Congratulations to…
Hollywood PAL has 15 kids training for the 2014 LA Marathon as part of Students Run LA (SRLA). With one month to go, the kids are tired, sore and nervous. Officer Maria Ceja brought in two speakers to inspire them and turn those nerves into excitement. First, Ericka from Running Circle led a “Good Form Clinic” on January 22nd and gave the kids individual pointers on how to run efficiently, how to reset one’s alignment during a race, and eased their aches and pains with posture tips. Tiffany Ortiz said, “She told me that I was moving my arms too much and that was making me more tired. She was right, and I already feel better with the new form.” Then on February 4th, a friend of a board member came to practice to give the kids emotional support. Eduardo, who works in Hollywood, is running his 7th marathon. He talked about when he started running and why he keeps running, how each marathon was different and what it means to him to complete a race. The kids were absolutely inspired by his dedication, not to mention impressed by his speed! On February 22nd, the kids will run 20 miles, then they will be ready for the LA Marathon on March 9th. Special thanks to Fabiolus Cafe for donating the pre-marathon feast on March 7th!
